All of the ecological lights are red. There is probably very little time left for humankind to conceive a sustainable development model. Furthermore, on a global scale, nothing serious has really been undertaken. Why? Because our idea of progress has led to the emergence of a system that doesn’t care for global and ecological realities, and because genuine consideration for the environment would imply questioning our representations and our very system in which our habits and modern mythologies cast anchor.
The next international climate and environmental summit (COP 21, Paris, December 2015) will certainly not be more convincing than the previous ones: climate, pollution, natural resource depletion... We have reached an impasse. Faced with this situation, we must rely on ourselves and take part in tangible local initiatives. This, however, might not be enough, and we ought to act on a larger scale, but without entering into ideological fights or sterile opposition.
Personal interests –whether individuals, companies, or nations – and fears are the starting points for most of the deadlocks that we are confronted with today. In order for our deep beliefs to emerge, we are left with only one option: to overcome our apprehension and become our own masters and to do what’s necessary for wisdom to prevail over special interests and common beliefs.
But how? By taking part in the construction of a point of reference that will geographically materialise our collective responsibility towards the planet. By acting with coherence so as to link our actions to our words, and our words to our identity. Hans Island is a gift to the world, an opportunity to refocus on our humanity and remember that the most essential energy, today and tomorrow, is found within ourselves. As an authentic “laboratory” to awaken consciousness, Hans the Universal Island is the symbolic focal point for the changes that we all need.

In one hand, the scientists insist to the urgent need of a massive reduction of CO2 emissions, at the risk of a major ecological and climatic upheaval. On the other hand, Nations plan to exploit up to the end the fossil fuels, waiting for it that the global warming removes permanent ice floes which still protect the Arctic Ocean. If this exploitation is the perspective for which we have to get ready, then no reduction of CO2 emissions is to be waited, and it will probably be the end of Earth and Oceans such as we know them.
The Emmanuel Hussenet answer
This project was conceived and designed by Emmanuel Hussenet, french guide in polar regions since 1989, writer and president of the Hans Insula Universalis association. His last book "Le Nouveau Monde, regard sur la disparition des banquises et sur le sens de choses" redraws his route and exposes the philosophy which underlies the initiative developed on this site.

Our Facebook page counts the number of Hans Island inhabitants. Don’t worry if the page is written in French! The global inhabitant counter is from our French Facebook page due to the fact that the initiative started in Paris.

Inhabitants on Hans Island
Hans belongs to all of us. It activates our conscience and shows us things from a different perspective: support this unique action.
Climate change debates are not followed by actions, and so we slide towards the irreparable. Is the ground of the question a matter of conscience?
If only humanity were innocent! Ice-floe melting is not due to a crazed sun or bad luck... Come here and check it by yourself.
An island measuring just one square kilometre lost amidst ice, which would have remained unnoticed if one small detail had not made it so important...
Come and virtually occupy Hans Island before Canada and Denmark decide to split it in two and determine our future.
We appeal every single one of you to come to occupy a common area: Hans Island.
Lost in the middle of the ices floes, uninhabitable, without mining resources but desired for its only position,
Hans has to belong to each of us to represent what we want for the world.
Hans is the symbol of our awakening, our inalienable humanity. Hans belongs to everyone.
